Chapter 5
Throwing and Scoring Techniques
Drawing Ankle Throw
This technique in Judo is referred to as TsurikorWashi. Start
the
move with the basic sleeve and lapel grip. Push your left hand
against your opponent's right arm so that he resists this action,
by pushing back against the left side of your chest with his
right
hand and advancing his right leg.
As soon as you begin to feel his resistance increasing, step a
small pace to your right with your right leg, placing your right
foot on the mat with the foot pointing slightly-inwards. Now tug
your opponents upper body forward and upwards by drawing your
hands
towards your left ear. These movements will cause the weight of
your opponents body to be poised over the toes of his right foot,
which will in turn make him react by attempting to step forward
with his right foot in an effort to adjust his balance.

Drawing Ankle Throw
At the same time as he prepares to make this step you should
speedily bring the sole of your left foot against the front of
his
right ankle (Figure). Withdraw your left hip and continue to
lift
his upper body forward over the toes of his right foot. When he
trips over your foot you must glide him down towards the mat,
maintaining the pull at his right jacket sleeve with your left
hand, and as he is falling twist him over on to his back.
The most common mistake a beginner often makes is to leave the
left
side of his body forward for longer than is necessary. When this
happens, the opponent will have a chance to regain his balance by
pushing against the left side of the beginners chest with his
right
hand.
