The SMWC All-Stars repeated as the 2002 CAWL Team Champions. We had 20 members
place. The tournament was an all day event with several delays. We took our team pictures at about 8 am
and took our picture winning the team award around 9:15 pm that night.
Many members (and parents) were tired after such a long day.
SMWC winners included Kyle Mason (60), Jeff Williams (65), Jonathan Faringer (70),
Steve Sargent (85), Lucus Black (90), Ryan Buff (100), Todd Smoot (105), and Matt Jones (115).
Kyle (right) also took home the OW award. A full listing of how we did
can be found on the CAWL Web Site.
Very large practice Feb 28th. Many HS as well as youth wrestlers working hard. Seniors are gearing up for the senior nationals as well as state events. Next week the All-Stars will start practice at 6:30pm while the high school and open wrestlers should plan to show up around 7pm. The annual meeting will be held at 7:15 pm. It looks like about 80 wrestlers will be our limit in the room for any one practice. If you show up late you might not get into the room. Also, we will be moving a 5th mat section into the room this next week. Contact Mike Rowe for more info.
SMWC's Jason Kiessling (right) and Mat Evelith won Maryland Public HS State Ch titles.
The US Military Chs will be held at Quantico March 30-31. See Coach G for more informaiton.
Mike Rowe needs help moving another mat section to Riverdale. Please contact him ASAP as we need the additional section right away.

all of you.
SMWC's Spring practice announcement was passed out a practice last night. Be sure to distribute at your county, regional, and state meets during the next few weeks, and to anyone else who you think might be interested in developing their skills in our spring program. Also, let any female wrestlers know that we also have a strong female wrestling contingent in SMWC. We are expecting 80 to 100 new members this spring. Our room will be too full if more then that participate and we may need to limit numbers as we've done the past few years.
Notice of Annual Meeting: SMWC's Annual Meeting and election of a new head coach will be Tuesday, March 5th, the
first night of open all-age practices. Since this is before the NCAA Championships, college wrestlers who
wish to be considered for the coaching position do not need to be present to be elected. The new coach
will take over after NCAAs. We wish to thank current Head Coach Jason Gabrielson
(right) for his past two years
support for our club. Jason will become Assistant Coach at Millersville University (D1) this fall.
In response to the various emails we have received lately about age/wt information, SMWC is not controlled by any league or outside organization. The only age/wt format we participate in is open tournaments attended by our travelling team. Young wrestlers from kids teams join our All-Star team so they can receive advanced training to prepare for high school and eventual college wrestling careers. We are not interested in any duel match format other then straight weight, and we do not encourage non-dedicated wrestlers to participate in our programs. Proof of our success with this approach has been demonstrated for many years. Judging by all the tremendous wins indicated below in this newsletter, it is working this year as well.
SMWC's Chris Rodrigues (right) was named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Feb 5th.
SMWC's Kevin Gabrielson has a nice mention in an article about NC State vs UNC match last night. SMWC's Ryan McCallum, Evan Sola, and Chris Rodrigues are also mentioned.
Anything can happen at a SMWC practice. Tuesday, Feb 12th saw Mike Rowe get pinned and Coach G say he was so impressed with some moves being made that he actually said he MIGHT admit to coaching some of the members. On a more serious note, club T-shirts, sweat shirts, coaching shirts, and all kinds of other club items are now available for purchase at most practices. See Diane Rowe if you want one of our club products.
SMWC's Corey Keener is the 2002 AAU Elementary National Champion. He won the 45lb. title Feb. 9th in Cary, N.C. Way to go Corey.
SMWC's Rudy Rueda and Mike Rowe got a
great write-up in the Washington
Post yesterday for both winning at St Albans. Rudy (left) also received OW and got his picture in the paper.
SMWC's Steve Ratley also won at St Albans.
SMWC's Ryan Herwig won NCAA Jr. College East Regionals in New Jersey and will be heading to the NCAA Jr College Chs in Minnisota the 15th and 16th. SMWC's Aaron Herwig is also having a great year. He won the MIAA Chs this past weekend as did SMWC's Mike Boettcher.
Attention all SMWC All-Star members. Because of the problems encountered Sunday driving to the meet, please provide Kelli Williams your cell phone number. We hope to be able to contact members in transit should they get separated in the future.
SMWC's Nicole Woody placed first at the Great Plains Championships in Iowa this past weekend. She is currently in first place in the USGWA Belt Series with three tournament wins and three pins.
Notice - now that we are getting close to the end of the high school season, it is important to remind wrestlers of our policy regarding hs wrestlers working out with the All-Stars before their season ends. So long as the high school wrestler was active with the All-Stars during their youth career, they are welcome to show up any time. Those who were not involved with our team must get permission to practice on an individual basis. We have had numerous high school wrestlers at practice recently including Mike Rowe, Rudy Rueda, Jason Kiessling, and Walt Hoffman.
The SMWC All-Stars are having a great season so far. With one weekend to go they are still undefeated in duel meet
action. Also, thanks to Kelly Williams and Chris Mason, we continue to get pictures (such as the one of Jonathan
Farrenger (right) and scores to update our schedule and results page.
Coach G got a concussion skiing Feb 9th. Only a slight knocking so he will still be at practice this week.
SMWC's William McKinney sent the picture on the left of him on the front lines in Afganistan. William will be back
home soon. Keep up the good work and stay safe William. We are all proud of you.
Tough practice at RB February 7th. Members are starting to peak at the right time as we approach the big end of season events. Good luck to SMWC's Hoffman, Forman, and Nucci at the Maryland high school state duels this weekend.
The Washington Post featured another SMWC member, Ryan Forman, in a nice article February 2nd.
The race is on - will SMWC's Ryan Buff or Corey Keener have the most tournament wins this season? Stay tuned.
Our college wrestlers are doing well. SMWC's Ryan Herwig has enjoyed a #1 ranking in NCAA Div. III this season. SMWC's Jon Peters has enjoyed a #1 ranking by the NCWA this season.
SMWC has been awarded the title of a USAW Gold Medal Club again this year. Among the criteria evaluated for this honor
include steady membership growth, the number of active certified coaches in the club, and the overall demonstrated
organizational strength of the club. According to Mark Scott, USAW Director of State Services, "These clubs have
demonstrated a high degree of administrative expertise of club activities and have provided the highest quality of
programming for their respective members." SMWC was one of only 33 clubs nationally last year to receive this honor and
only 60 were awarded the honor this year from a total of 2800 clubs nationwide.
SMWC is also the only Maryland club to make the grade. One Virginia club (Central Virginia Youth) was
awarded the honor. The picture at right are members who were at practice the night the award was announced.
SMWC winners at the Warrior's Tournament Feb 2nd included Tyler Almaguer (left), Cory Keener, Jeff Williams, Steve Sargent, Luke Black, and Ryan Buff. SMWC had two other finalists, Nathan Peck and Jonathan Farrenger placed 2nd.
Anyone notice lately how well SMWC's girls have been wrestling.
SMWC's Nicole Woody is the first girl ever to win the Spring Grove tournament. This is considered a major pre-hs
event. Nicole also missed winning the OW by one fall for her age group. SMWC's boys are also on a roll lately.
Ryan Buff, Kyle Bybee, Hunter Rowe, and Cory Keener all won at Williamsport. Cory pinned everyone. This was also
Ryan's 20th win in a row this season. Good job all.
SMWC's Ryan Buff (right) won and Norristown Jan 28th and Jeff Williams placed 2nd. Coach Buff has been the SMWC competition coach at most of the tournaments this season with from two to eight wrestlers competing every weekend.
Spring practice - plans are underway now for our spring freestlye season. Several years ago when we practiced at Riverdale, our membership approached 100 members at practice every night. Hopefully, our spring practices will again reach these numbers. At this point we should be able to get 5 mat sections out in the multi-purpose room to hold all the new members. Also, with Coach Jason back at school, we are again looking for a new spring Head Coach. Please keep your eyes open and provide any names to Pam Farranger of possible candidates. As usual, our annual meeting and election of a Head Coach will be in March. This meeting will be very important if the club is to continue as a viable force in Maryland and Northern Virginia wrestling in the future.
SMWC's Corey Keener (left with Stephen and Randy) won the tournament at Oley, PA.
As most of the All-Star members at Tuesday and Thursday practice already know, we have had some problems recently
with getting the cafateria cleaned prior to rolling out the mats. The RB Athletic Director is meeting with
custodial staff today in an effort to correct the problem. Members should continue to show up as early as they can
until we get this issue resolved. It's been a major effort for the coach to personally clean the cafeteria, get the
mats out, then run a two hour practice every Tuesday and Thursday.
SMWC winners at Mechanicsburg (right) Jan 19th included Kyle Mason, Jeffrey Williams, Ryan Mikula, and Ryan Buff. South River was won by SMWC's Eli Black. SMWC's Aaron Herwig won at Hammond. Good job all.
Nice article in the Washington Post about SMWC's Walt Hoffman at Northern HS. Other SMWC members mentioned in the article include Ryan Forman, Sonni Nucci, Ross Draheim, Max Buff, and Jimmy Voltis.
SMWC had 11 members in competition at various colleges during the Virginia Duals Jan 11/12. Two true Freshmen,
Evan Sola (UNC-left) and Kevin Gabrielson (NCSU-right) each got their first career pins during the event.
SMWC's Jon Peters, wrestling for the Apprentice School in small college division, had three straight wins and
currently enjoys a #1 national ranking in his division.
SMWC winners at Arundel Jan 13th were Jason Kiessling, Mike Rowe and Rudy Rueda. Jason also received OW.
SMWC winners at the Northern tournament included Soni Nucci, Ryan Forman, and Walt Hoffman.
SMWC winners at Laurel Jan 6th included Corey Keener, Ryan Buff, and Jeff Williams. Jeff also won the fastest pin award.
Those won attended are shown at right.
SMWC's Jason Kiesling had a nice article in the Washington Post Southern Maryland Supplement on Sunday.
SMWC winners at Walkersville included Matt Jones, Corey Keener, Todd Smoot, and Eric Hoffman. Nicole Woody won a big event and took OW in Michigan.
SMWC's Mike Rowe has a great article in the Washington Post about his big win at the Eagle Holiday Classic at Colonial Forge HS this past weekend.
SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member Luke Palumbo put on a short clinic at practice Thursday 27th. Luke showed some of his smooth throw-bys and snap-downs.
Holiday practices: The Maryland Riverdale Baptist practices will be held the next two Thursdays at the regular time. Virginia practices will be held Wednesdays at Robinson. Don't have the time yet.
SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member Kevin Gabrielson (left) gave a well attended short clinic and worked with members at practice
December 20th. Highlights included his techniques for gaining control from reverse headlock situations and
also his throw-by takedown. Following the clinic, the All-Stars showed Kevin their skills by demonstrating the
27 different takedowns the members have learned since practices started this fall. Several ex-All-Stars were
there including Mike Rowe, Joe Sargent and Rudy Rueda.
Additional pictures from the clinic.
In keeping with a practice started two years ago, Coach G gave the team trophies to members who competed in the Mt St Joe tournament and who were at practice Tuesday night.
Members who wanted the four night per week practice schedule haven't been showing up for Monday night practices. If you want practices to continue, you absolutely must start attending. Our team will suffer during the regular season if our members can't get into tournament shape in the few weeks remaining.
Virginia SMWC wreslers did well in their Mason-Dixon Team qualifier. Members representing Virginia at the Mason-Dixon include Kyle Mason, Todd Smoot, and Matt Jones. All-Star Head Coach Rick Jones will coach the Virginia team.
SMWC did well at the Mt St Joe tournament on
Dec 16th with the few members we had who entered. Winning their divisions were Colton Rowe, John Gallagher,
Corey Keener, Lucus Black, and Steve Sargent. We also won the peewee team award and placed 3rd in juniors.
One interesting
note is that this was John Gallagher's first tournament win. John moved up to our team from junior leagues
this season and has made serious advances recently. John is shown on the right with SMWC's Jeff Williams,
Coach G and new Coach Joe Killebrew.
There has been a request for an exception to allow a non-All-Star member to practice with us during our regular season. SMWC Executive Committee members are requested to contact any All-Star coach for particulars and to provide their recommendation. Current Executive Committee members are listed at the end of our Const. and Bylaws page..
Coach Jason got an announcement on the Millersville University News Page
New weight classes for Olympic events. The proposed categories are:
Big weekend for SMWC wrestlers Dec 8-9th. SMWC's Kyle Bybee, Gregg Martino, and Matt Jones all placed 1st at the Yellow Jacket tournament in Delaware. SMWC's Nicole Woody took first and OW at the American Classic Girls Championship Belt Series in Richmond, Michigan. She beat two defending National champs to do it. At the Maryland Catholics, SMWC's Aaron Herwig and Mike Rowe dominated. And finally, SMWC's Derrik McDermott, Eli Black, and Jason Kiessling all won at the Chopticon tournament.
Too Bad - We get to practice right through the holidays. Will not hold practice on Christmas Day or New Year's Day though. Remember, only SMWC members who were also All-Stars can practice with us over the holidays when public schools are closed.
SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member Steve Chop sent a nice note about what he has been doing since he last walked on a mat for us 13 years back. He now lives in Carroll County and recently had a son. Won't be long before he's back on the mat again.
SMWC's Jeff Rusak has a nice article in the Mace & Crown Newspaper
SMWC's Kyle Mason and Erik Hoffman each won a tournament with 24'' trophies Dec 3rd. Way to go Kyle and Erik. Remember that we have a team/individual tournament coming up Dec 16th.
The 2002 All-Star Flyer has been updated. Please post some copies at your school as we need a few more serious wrestlers to join before our season starts.
Coach Jones changed the All-Star practice schedule beginning Monday. Note that we will be able to hold RB practices throughout the holidays. The schedule for times and days may change a little though. More on this next week. CAWL league fees of $80 are due now.
The All-Star practices have now covered 15 takedowns, 7 pinning combinations, 8 escapes or reversals, and 7 rides. If you are one of those who attends practice only once a week, you have missed a significant amount of training. We start our team competitions on the 16th with a tournament at Mt St Joe. Once the regular season starts, look for more on the mat wrestling and less training.
Due to past problems with members of other junior league teams practicing with the All-Stars during their regular season, the coaches have decided that only All-Star team members or former team members will be able to practice with the team between the Christmas break and the end of February. The All-Star coaches need to concentrate on those wrestlers who will help contribute to their team's successes. SMWC members should attend their own junior league practices if that is who they wish to represent. SMWC members who participate on onther teams should also be advised that they must drop their membership if they wish to compete against SMWC when open team competition is involved. However, members who compete for other junior league or beltway teams are exempt from this requirement so long as the team competition only involves the All-Stars and not the full SMWC club entry.
SMWC's Ryan Herwig won at the Kutztown Invitational on Saturday.
SMWC's "big guns" looked impressive at the State College tournament November 24th. Taking first was Mike Rowe and Marco Priolo. Mike also took home OW. Walt Hoffman had a close loss in the finals to #1 ranked Nathan Galloway.
SMWC's Kevin Gabrielson recently wrote a paper "Title IX: Time for Change".
SMWC's William McKinney is currently in the Middle East and reports he is glad some members are sending him emails.
SMWC's Steven Woody won at Steven Welsh. Biggest local tournament but only three members entered. Sorry showing for the areas "so called" top club.
SMWC's Ryan Buff injured his hand at school and then made it worse by wrestling at the Rising Sun tournament. He might be out for a few weeks.
There is a new wrestling movie out called Reversal
Warning - If you are one of the members who uses web based slash and trash forums, be advised that at least two popular forums are monitoring your connections and cause you to send emails to them whenever you click their page.
SMWC All-Star practices start at 6:30 pm rather then 7 pm. All regular members are welcome at RB practices. However, please remember that you need to follow the same activities as the rest of the team during practice. This year we have coaches and open wrestlers at most weight classes attending nearly every practice.
Received an email from SMWC's Willie Harris and Marc Hoffer this week. They both wrestle for American university and plan to visit a practice soon.
Thanks to the Woody's and the Rowe's we have now moved a 4th mat section to RB. With the large practices we have been experiencing, the 4th section is badly needed.
SMWC Hall-of-Fame member Ryan Herwig won his first college event, the Trenton State Open this past weekend. SMWC's Ryan Buff also won a tournament.
The annual MSWA Bull roast was held November 4 at Michael's in Glen Burnie. SMWC's table included the Woody's, the Rowe's, the Jones', the Palumbo's and Coach G. Mr's G was in New York on a photo shoot. SMWC All-Star Head Coach Rick Jones received the Outstanding Junior League Coach Award. SMWC Hall-of-Fame member and now Penn State Asst. Coach Todd Beckerman also attended. Todd promised to attend an All-Star practice during Christmas break for a clinic. Todd was a member of our all-stars before going on to become an NCAA All-American at Nebraska.
Coach G brings various catalogues to practice for those who need to order equipment.
Practice was very tough Tuesday, Oct 31 with several nose bleeds, split lips, shin scrapes, etc. This is expected with the larger numbers at practice. Since we have lost our medic, the club needs someone with medical experience to help when kids get hurt. If you are available to help on a regular basis, please let one of our coaches know.
Howard University has released their starting line-up for the season. SMWC's Frank Wright will be starting at 141 lbs for Howard.
The Oct 28th tournament at Montgomery Blair drew a good mix of regional wrestlers. It also had one of the largest
contingents of female wrestlers ever seen in this area.
SMWC winners included Eli Black, Ryan Buff (left - who won both kids and cadets), Coach Jason Gabrielson (right),
Marchello Neucci,
Marco Priolo, and Nicole Woody. Nicole not only won her girls class of 4 entries but also a larger boys class. She received the
OW award for her efforts. Many wrestlers at the tournament said they plan to start practicing this week.
A little late but Kellie Williams has sent
pictures from the All-Star Picnic last summer
North Carolina State University released their starting line-up for the season yesterday. SMWC Hall-of-Fame
member Kevin Gabrielson will be starting in the 157 lb. weight class. The first chance for members to watch
Kevin compete locally will be November 17th in Annapolis at the Navy Invitational.
Anyone going to a Hayfield practice make sure you take the map to Riverdale Baptist with you. We just put a new map to RBHS on this site.
Our 2001-2002 Fall Club Information Flyer is out. Send it to your friends who are interested in joining SMWC.
Held a great practice session October 18th. Plenty of mambers on hand and lots of action.
Two new breakdown techniques and three new takedowns were demonstrated.
We had a guest
Iulian Maimuta, former Romanian National Team Member, show up to visit and workout. He is in the
yellow shirt in the group picture. Iulian hasn't learned
much folkstyle yet but will be learning as time goes on. We would like him to consider becoming one of SMWC's
freestyle coaches this spring.
Several members were missing. Practice was a little too tough on Tuesday night it seems.
Coach G gave out New Zealand club shirts on Tuesday night at practice to members who contributed old shoes
to the club. The shirts (right) are a little more "colorful" then what we have around here. Has anyone
been pig hunting lately?
With the pre-season now in full swing, SMWC held its first "intense" practice Tuesday night, Oct 16. Several of the state's HS best were worked over during the session. Expect practices to get harder every night as members get ready to win local events.
Juniors and Seniors, get your recruitment resume listed on our pages soon. College coaches are already looking.
Coach G returned from a week visit to Southern California Wednesday. While he was there he visited with
the team at Golden West College. GW is coached by Dale Deffner and Raul Duarte, two of Coach G's wrestling
partners from the 60s.
SMWC's Mike Rowe (right) won the 2001 AAU Triple Crown Award. He is the 4th
SMWC wrestler to win this prestegious award.
Practice started October 2nd with a smaller but enthusiastic group on hand. Coach G introduced one of our new coaches, Kwabena Asamoah, a former SMWC member, Maryland HS star and Morgan State standout. The Riverdale Baptist HS multi-purpose room worked well for practice. It only takes a few minutes to roll the mats out and move the tables around. We should be able to use four sections of NEW mats every night and could probably squeeze in a 5th section if necessary. Club practices will continue on T-Th nights from 7-8:30 until the high school season starts.
SMWC member Scott Munsey called Sep 30 to wish everyone well. He will be getting out of the military very soon and plans to get in some practice time with the club.
SMWC members should know that one of our members, William McKinney, is currently serving in the US Marine Corps and has been deployed aboard the USS BATAAN. Anyone wishing to email William can reach him aboard ship.

In Memory of Those Who Were Taken in This Area and in New York - September 11, 2001
SMWC has received a shipment of club shirts from the Counties Huna Wild Boar Wrestling Team on New Zealand. The shirts are for those members who donated old wrestling shoes to the club last spring. Please see Coach G at our first practice to pick up your shirt.
SMWC Hall-of-Fame member Todd Beckerman has joined the staff at Penn State University. He will be working with Head Coach and SMWC Hall-of-Fame member Troy Sunderland.
