Considerations for Prospective Colleges

As college visit time approaches, the following suggested list of questions should be considered by high school seniors when evaluating which school to attend in the fall.

School Questions

  1. Does the school offer my potential major?
  2. What is the community near the school like?
  3. What is tuition per semester at the school?
  4. Are there places in the area where I could get a job?
  5. What is the weather like?
  6. Are any of my friends attending the school?
  7. What kind of arrangements such as tutoring are available if I need help with studies?
  8. Are there any other school activities available I might be interested in?

School Wrestling Team Questions

  1. What did the school do the past few years in NCAA?
  2. How many NCAA qualifiers does the conference allow?
  3. How many All-Americans has the school produced in the past 10 years?
  4. Who did well in NCAAs last season and who is expected to be competing in the fall?
  5. What are qualifications of coach?
  6. Who else has been recruited for next fall?
  7. What are the non-conference teams like the school schedules - any top ranked teams?

Scholarship Questions

  1. What does the "full ride" or "partial" scholarship cover?
  2. Is the scholarship for five years (includes Red Shirt year)?
  3. Is there an annual scholarship re-assessment requirement?
  4. Where will my accommodations be and how will I live?
  5. Are there special arrangements for meals/cafeteria food?
  6. Who will I room with?
  7. If I decide later on to live in an apartment, how much of my costs will be paid by the scholarship?

Personal Wrestling Questions

  1. What weight class do they expect me to wrestle next year and who is in the weight currently?
  2. Will I be expected to start next year?
  3. Who do they have near my weight now that will work folkstyle with me (coach/assistant/team mate)?
  4. Do they have an off season support club for freestyle?
  5. Will the school's support club pay for me to attend freestyle events such as USAW Regional Events, University Nationals, Senior Nationals, other open events, and Olympic Trials.
  6. Who do they have near my weight that will work freestyle with me?
  7. How often will I or the team be able to schedule events where I can compete close to my home?

Family Questions

  1. If within driving distance, how long does it take to get to the school?
  2. How much is a plane ticket to the campus from my home?
  3. What kind of break will I have over Christmas?
  4. Are first year students allowed cars?
  5. Does my family get to attend my wrestling events free?
